Our story begins in 1989, when our founder Amir Sharif set out to create the perfect casual shoe. After years working in footwear design, Amir grew frustrated with the lack of truly comfortable, versatile, and affordable options on the market.
He dreamed of starting his own company that would provide thoughtfully designed shoes using only the finest materials and construction methods. Shoes that combined elegance and durability for everyday wear.
And most importantly, Amir envisioned footwear that made people feel amazing from the first step.
Crafting the Makalu® Difference
Armed with a small team of experienced shoemakers, Amir set up a workshop in Los Angeles, California and began hand-making his first shoe: the now-iconic Makalu Moccasin.
The moccasin’s flexible construction and premium leather delivered immediate comfort, while its versatile styling effortlessly paired with everything from jeans to dresses. Amir knew he had succeeded in creating something special when the first 100 pairs immediately sold out!
Buoyed by the moccasin’s popularity, Amir expanded the fledgling Makalu® brand. He added new shoe styles and Colors while never compromising on quality or comfort.
Our talented designers carefully select rich leathers, soft suedes, and fine textiles that mold to your feet. They incorporate cushioned footbeds, flexible soles, and supportive arch technology into every shoe. And our skilled craftspeople expertly stitch and finish each pair by hand.
We take pride in sourcing many materials locally here in California, reducing our environmental impact. And we only work with tanneries and textile suppliers that meet our stringent ethical and sustainability standards.
Boots Built for Adventure
In the late 1990s, Amir decided to expand Makalu® into rugged, fashionable boots designed for outdoor adventure.
Our talented team poured their energy into creating durable, water-resistant boots packed with trail-ready features. Makalu® hiking boots incorporate shock-absorbing Vibram® soles, padded ankle support, and breathable textile linings to keep feet comfortable for miles.
For snowy getaways, we offer insulated winter boots to stay warm and dry, as well as slip-resistant outsoles that grip slippery surfaces. And our selection of stylish Chelsea boots, chukkas, and moto boots infuse everyday looks with rugged flair.
Timeless, Trendy Sandals
Soon after our successful foray into boots, customers began requesting comfortable, fashion-forward sandals from Makalu®.
Once again, our designers answered the call with a line of warm-weather footwear that combines simplicity with standout style. Our leather, suede, and textile sandals come in of-the-moment silhouettes like chunky slides, sporty straps, and sleek mules.
We add modern touches like metallic hardware, bold patterns, and pops of color without compromising wearability. Our contoured footbeds and lightweight flexible soles ensure all-day comfort for everything from backyard barbecues to tropical getaways.
The Makalu® Family Grows
Over the past 30 years, the Makalu® family has grown from a passionate shoemaker working in a small Los Angeles shop into a thriving company with customers worldwide.
But our close-knit spirit and commitment to quality remain unchanged. We take pride in the artistry and care that goes into every pair of Makalu® shoes.
Our original handcrafted moccasin is still artfully stitched by hand in our California workshop. And you can find our boots, sandals, flats, and more at fine retailers across the country.
We continue innovating with new styles while staying true to Amir’s founding vision. Our aim is to keep your feet happy and confident wherever life takes you.
Looking Toward the Future
